NASA astronauts show off a new space toilet costing $23 million

According to foreign media reports, recently, a space toilet designed for women landed on the International Space Station. The new toilet was loaded in a cargo spacecraft, which was successfully launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Center on Wallops Island, Virginia on Friday night local time and arrived on Monday. Astronauts will test the toilet in the next few months.

It is understood that the new toilet weighs about 100 pounds (45 kg) and is 28 inches (71 cm) high, which is about half of the two Russian-made toilets already used by the space station. https://www.shineful.com.tw/ma51.htm,This new toilet is 65% smaller and nearly half lighter than the toilet currently used by ISS.

This new, smaller toilet will fit into NASA’s Orion capsule, which will travel to the moon in future missions. In a new video released by NASA on Tuesday, astronaut Chris Cassidy took the audience to visit the waste disposal and toilet (WHC) and explained more about the feeling of going to the toilet in space. "Desire to go, need to go, just like on earth. You just know that you have to go. It doesn't feel any different, because the liquid may float in your bladder or elsewhere. No, it's just the same feeling."

As previously reported, the new toilet features a slanted seat cushion, a new shape and a redesigned urination funnel.

The microgravity toilet used on the ISS uses suction to prevent excrement from overflowing when going to the toilet in space, but in order to better adapt to the female body structure, the new system adopts a new shape. The toilet is also better for collecting excrement than before.

NASA stated in a report released in June this year that compared with the previous toilet, the new toilet is smaller in mass, simpler to use, and also improves the comfort and performance of the user and the urine can be recovered by the spacecraft. The system is handled safely.

The toilet will be placed in a compartment next to the old toilet on the US side of the space station. The current toilet on the US side of the space station was designed in the 1990s.

It is reported that this new type of universal garbage disposal system toilet will remain on the International Space Station until the end of its service life.
